This is an eclectic martial art combining many styles for a realistic approach to self-defense. We teach hand to hand combat derived from muay thai kickboxing and multiple forms of karate, judo throws and takedowns, arm bars, wrist and finger locks, chokes, pins, pressure points, and brazilian jiu jitsu, both for effective street use and competition. We break fighting down into four stages based on physical distance: Punching, Kicking, Throwing and Grappling. Thanks to our combination of modern and traditional styles, we provide comprehensive training for our students that enables them not just to perform well in competition, but also to defend themselves in a large variety of real-life situations. The mixed martial arts program also provides students with knowledge of the law as it applies to the use of force. In teaching all of the facets of self defense from striking to grappling within a single program, our martial arts school distinguishes itself from any other single martial arts school. We believe in being prepared for everything.

It takes hard work, dedication, and time on the mat to achieve a black belt. No forms or katas are done in our classes, because our priorities are on self-defense and combat.

Our mixed martial arts classes are divided into two groups: Youths classes for ages 8-13, and adults classes for 14 & over. For class times, please click here.

(Private lessons only: Please contact Sensei Adam Brooks or Sensei Richard Calvagno)

Our Stick & Knife classes provide effective training with a less strenuous workout that won't leave you sore the next day.
The stick fighting portion offers instruction in the use of single and double sticks, including blocking, striking and grappling.
Stick training is designed to enhance foot work and stick control.
The knife fighting portion of this class offers instruction in vitals templates, and use of single and double blades.
This program is designed to give the practitioner offensive knife skills as well as defensive skills. It is important to remember that if you do not understand how to use a knife properly, you will not become proficient in using one for defense, and will also be far less capable of protecting yourself against knife-wielding attackers.
The Stick & Knife program does not have flashy drills. Techniques are based on practical fighting and real life situations. Power, speed and accuracy are our priorities.

Sijo Adriano D. Emperado is credited for the founding of the KAJUKENBO self-defense system in Honolulu, Hawaii between 1947 and 1949. This was accomplished with the aid of other Masters of various aspects of the martial arts. Their men and their contributions are Instructor P.Y.Y. Choo - Korean Karate, Instructor J. Holek - Kodokan Judo, Professor C. Chang - Chinese Boxing (Kungfu)
After two years of exchanging ideas and techniques, these five martial artists created a street-wise, highly effective combat system which derived its name from the first letters of the styles that comprised it. Ka (from a Korean style of Karate) Ju (from Judo and Ju-Jitsu) Ken (from Kenpo) Bo (from Chinese boxing, Kung Fu)
Since then the art of Kajukenbo has developed a reputation as practical street fighting. Sijo Emperado, the founder, had a rugged childhood in the rough and tumble back-streets of Honolulu. His initial martial arts training was in Escrima, which later influenced aspects of Kajukenbo. Sijo Emperado later took up Kenpo and reached the rank of fifth-degree black belt while studying under Professor William K.S. Chow.
The first Kajukenbo school was opened in the Palama Settlement, and operated by Emperado, and his brother Joe. The brutal training that took place their was legendary . Since the goal was to be invincible on the street, the training had to be realistic, the students sparred with full contact. Broken bones were an everyday occurrence, and the trauma of training caused some to become sick to their stomachs. The number of students in the school soon dwindled to a dedicated few.
Through the years, Sijo Emperado has trained thousands of men, women and children in self-defense through the practical application of the martial arts. He has taught armed forces personnel as well as the Honolulu Police Department and Vice Squad. But, despite all of his success, Sijo Emperado remains a dedicated and sincere man whose chief aim for the martial arts is to build strong, honorable and dedicated students.

Masaaki Hatsumi is the current Soke (grandmaster) of nine separate schools of combat arts. He has placed all nine of these schools under the umbrella of the Bujinkan organization. These arts are collectively referred to, as “Budo Taijutsu” which means “warrior body movement” and these are the arts that we are studying. The following is a list of the nine separate schools:
Togakure Ryu Ninpo - Hidden door
Kukishindin Ryu - Nine Demon Gods
Kumugakure Ryu Ninpo - Hidden Cloud
Gyokushin Ryu Ninpo - Jewel Heart
Gikan Ryu - Example of Justice
Koto Ryu - Knock down the tiger
Gyokko Ryu - Jewel tiger
Takagi Yoshin Ryu - Raise your heart to the high trees
Shinden Fudo Ryu - Immovable spirit
These schools of combat were designed in the feudal days of Japan and were primarily used to protect themselves and their families. Many of these arts were strictly outlawed and those who were caught practicing them were killed along with their families therefore they were practiced in secret. The techniques and strategies were to be used against the samurai who were better equipped and highly trained soldiers therefore the techniques had to be unorthodox and novel in their approach and execution. What developed is an extremely effective, battle proven form of combat with a unique philosophy to guide its use. This is the art of the Ninja.
“Ninjutsu developed as a highly illegal counter culture to the ruling samurai elite, and for this reason alone, the origins of the art were shrouded by centuries of mystery, concealment, and deliberate confusion of history.”
Masaaki Hatsumi~

Our Mixed Martial Arts style was developed from approximately 30 years of martial arts training, teaching and learning experience. Originally we trained in various martial arts, including Tae-Kwan-Do Moo Duk Kwan (Moo Duk Kwan literally means "the institute of martial virtue") and Muay Thai. However, we found that most styles, by themselves, weren't wholly useful when it came to real fighting situations. We quickly recognized the need for having more realistic techniques which could be effective in the street and everyday applications, and through this we created a style which we called American Combat Karate. Later in our training, we became involved in Japanese and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as well, and combined them with our existing style. The result was a very well-rounded form of Mixed Martial Arts, with an even balance of standing and ground combat, designed to work in real situations.
